Canadian open sailing championship starts today

Some of the top sailors from across the country will be on the waters of St. Margarets Bay this week for the Trihedral Canadian Yachting Association’s National Sailing Championships.
The four-day Canadian open championships, which begin today at the St. Margaret Sailing Club, will feature racing in laser (male) and laser radial, both male and female. The event is open to sailors ages 14 and older.
This regatta is a qualifying event for Canada’s 2012 world sailing team.
The first race of the day is scheduled for 11 a.m. today, Thursday and Friday. The first race on Saturday is slated for 10:30 a.m. Prizes will be handed out following the closing ceremony at 5 p.m. Saturday.
It’s been a busy season of sailing at the club in Glen Haven, on the eastern shore of St. Margarets Bay. Last month, the CYA’s Youth National Sailing Championships were held at the St. Margaret Sailing Club.
The Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron’s Lisa Ross, an Olympian in 2008, and Danielle Dube, an international competitive sailor, are each members of the 2011 Canadian sailing team in laser radials. Ross is on the podium team while Dube is part of the development team.
