Nearly one year after their release from Somalian pirates, Paul and Rachel Chandler of Kent, England announce plans to set sail again. “Some people wonder why we’d want to go to sea again,” Paul Chandler remarks. “But others, especially fellow sailors, are happy to see us getting back to the life we love.”
Paul and Rachel Chandler made headlines in 2009 when Somalian pirates stormed their beloved yacht Lynn Rival on its way from the Seychelles to Tanzania. The couple was taken to Somalia and held hostage in solitary confinement, separated, beaten and threatened by their kidnappers. When family, friends and strangers were finally able to compile their substantial ransom, ex-London cabbie Dahir Kadiye helped negotiate the couple’s release and return to England.
Despite the traumatic year, it seems the Chandlers have not let the incident affect their love of the ocean. They plan to spend a year restoring Lynn Rival before setting sail again. This time, the Chandlers’ nautical wanderlust will not lead them anywhere near the Indian Ocean. Instead, they will be sailing the South Atlantic.
